Canberra Workshop held on Addressing the Fate of Himalayan Sourced Rivers in the Context of Climate Change

A team of interdisciplinary researchers from Australia and New Zealand is working collaboratively with their counterparts in China, Nepal, India, Bangladesh and Bhutan to address the critical climate change adaptation challenges facing the Himalayan region in the new millennium. These challenges are being addressed head-on using Climate Change Adaptation tools and in the development of a Knowledge Management Framework for Himalayan sourced rivers to inform and support decision making processes. An overarching strategy of this collaboration is to develop a source (highland mountains) to sink (lowland plains) approach to managing climate change risks in the region.

Public Lecture: European Climate Diplomacy Day. International Climate Negotiations 101. Wednesday 17 June

More than 190 countries will meet in Paris in December to reach an agreement on how to limit global temperature increase to below two degrees Celsius. But many people and the climate negotiations difficult to understand. This event aims to demystify the climate negotiations, and will include a chance to hear from different perspectives on climate issues – science, diplomacy and business. It is designed as a general introduction to the topics, for a non-specialist audience. This event will include a free showing of “The Climate Blueprint” film. This award winning one-hour documentary charts the history of climate negotiations, its main actors and the issues at stake. It will be the Australian premiere of this film, screened simultaneously in 7 Australian cities as part of the European Union Climate Diplomacy Day which will be celebrated around the world. Climate change will affect everyone, not just diplomats, and a wide range of people will be part of the solution. The screening will be followed by an interactive panel discussion with representatives from science, business, politics and diplomacy with a wealth of experience in tackling climate change problems.

Public lecture by Christiana Figueras - “The Road to Paris – Efforts to Achieve a New Climate Change Agreement in 2015”

Christiana was in Australia to meet with the Australian government to talk about the upcoming climate change conference at the end of the year in Paris. Countries are currently developing a new legally binding agreement on climate change. It is hoped by many that this new agreement will initiate new and decisive action to address climate change from 2020 onwards.
